Universal Life Church

Since I started writing, I have two reasons why I write. The first is I feel something deep in my spirit that drives me to type it all out. There are other times I write as a discipline. I sit down and just think of a word that describes an event or experience I have had. I started this as a discipline, but I finish having found the lesson in the following.

Dry?

Dry

There is a downside to pretty weather. We have been enjoying the wonderful cool and dry weather here in Mississippi. For close to a month we have not had any substantial rain after what seemed to be three months of stormy weather. I have enjoyed everyday that a shining sun has greeted me. Yesterday evening I was in my front yard and I noticed all my shrubs and ivy were drooping. I have a flowering shrub on the side of the house that has been progressing in this droopy look. I know it must be that I am just slow for I never connected the drooping plants to the fact we have had no rain. I was saying to my wife, "I wonder what is wrong with all these plants?" I looked down at my shoes with dust all over them and it was a great eureka moment?. they are dry.

Just a month ago I was bragging about how beautiful my grass looks, and now it is starting to look very dry. This morning I arose and pulled out my water hose and began to water my thirsty plants and reflected on my own life. In seasons when things are going well, the danger we all face is dryness. It is hard to diagnose your problem, because you can check off where you pray and attend church, however over time, if you don't recognize the problem, you will face the reality that your spirit life has dried up.

I suppose I can relate to some degree to my azalea bush, St. Augustine Grass, Nandinas, and the other plans that live in my yard. Living is not enough to stay alive. Surviving is not enough to survive. Just as I realized the investment I had in all these plants was about to disappear, it is possible to allow pretty weather to lull us into thinking everything is fine.

Later this morning as I turned my attention to my wife's very dirty van, I began to apply the warm sudsy water and scrub the dirty rims, I realize this is what we all need to do in our spiritual life. We need to make a little extra effort to be sure the foliage of our faith does not droop or the blooms on our hope do not fall away.

I am in awe at what God has done around me in the past nine months. It is like nothing I would have expected. From moving, to our first services in Clinton and the wonderful experiences and people along the way, I want to be sure I make the extra effort to keep everything well watered.

Storms bring rain and in spite of the boisterous thunder and blinding lighting, there is a forgotten element that is the blessing of the storm. Our lives, harvest, hope and spirit receives rain from heaven. It opens our spirit to drink in the rain and hope for a day when the sun is shinning. My little message today is admonition to all of us.

If you're in a storm, the precipitation is watering your promise. If your in the middle of a fulfilled prophecy, be thankful and take the steps to be sure you are getting what you need to keep your spirit properly watered.

I am thankful I could take a deep drink from that Fountain today, to see the wonderful hand of the shepherd leading me beside the still water this morning as he used the condition of my yard to be a parable that ministered to my heart.

May you drink deeply of His Spirit today!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Following the Gospel
Making the World a Better Place.

This nation was founded on Christian principles. The majority of Americans claim to have some kind of religion. You may find the Holy Bible in 90% of our homes. That's the good news.

Now the bad news:

It's plain to see that very few folk read their bible. It says in the Gospel According to Matt-hew, Chapter 24 Verse 5; For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many. That is so true and frightening. If you have wondered why there are so many different de-nominations of religion, this is the reason. Some can be considered Cults, false religions. They are the works of men, not God.

It seems that people are too gullible, and if a man is a "forceful speaker", they believe every-word he says.

(1). Hitler deceived the whole nation of Germany making them believe that the Jewish people were trash, an inferior race, and needed to be exterminated. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(2). Charles Manson had a large following, ;and he, like Hitler, made them believe murder was alright, nothing wrong with it, if it served your purpose. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(3). Then there?s the large party that followed Rev Jim Jones to South America, and were persuaded, or forced to drink poison. (See that ye be not deceived).

(4). Read about the Mountain Meadow Massacre, carried out by the (LDS) Mormons in Utah, circa, 1856. They call themselves Mormons, and have a book printed which they call the Book of Mormons. I call it The Book Of Morons.

All that is true history. All one needs do is check it out. Don't Take My Word For It.
"If any miserable scoundrels come here, cut their throats." Brigham Young

"The Mountain Meadows Massacre stands without a parallel amongst the crimes that stain the pages of American history. It was a crime committed without cause or justification of any kind to relieve it of its fearful character... When nearly exhausted from fatigue and thirst, [the men of the caravan] were approached by white men, with a flag of truce, and induced to surrender their arms, under the most solemn promises of protection. They were then murdered in cold blood."

William Bishop, Attorney to John D. Lee.

All of this is very frightening to me, to even think of having people in the world like that. It is my solemn promise to alert everyone I can about these things and try to make this a better world. I am 83 years of age, have 4 lovely daughters, and many grands and greats. So you can see why it is so important for me to want a clean safe world for them. I will strive to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Be a friend and help others when I can.

It's sad to know that all my efforts will be of no great consequence, knowing scripture con-cerning the Great Tribulation Period which is to come. Nonetheless I will make every effort to get in touch with as many people as I can, and attempt to make them see how things are going, and to not just "blindly" follow someone. May God help us all. Amen

Methods and Message of the Maker
Changing Methods and the Eternal Message of an Unchanging Maker

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;.."

Is it not amazing to consider the different ways God speaks and communicates to this world? If you study Gods dealing with man, you will find he rarely used the same method twice. In the Miracles of Jesus, he never duplicated what he had done before in the same method. He was confronted with the same need many times, but he seemed to reach into the creativity of the Divine to leave a lesson for us to learn.

Though his methods vary, the message of God to humanity has not changed. The Lord has been giving clear signs and confirmations to the things he values. God understands the power of perception. He has gone to great lengths to impress on humanity some basic principles of his nature and desires. Why would God go to such a great length to manifest the divine in humanity for a plan that would not finally culminate for hundreds and thousands of years? I say it is because he wants us to get a picture and perception of his nature. This picture and perception can change the way we see and how we live our lives. This vision of God changes the way men interact with each other. When we get a proper vision of the values of a holy God, it is a life transforming opportunity.

"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" Heb 1:3

I believe God is still watching the power of his message bring about the fullness of his will. Person to person as the Gospel is transmitted in words, action and the very spirit/ attitude of those he uses brings about a universal view of the maker of it all.

Imagine in your mind the Eternal Spirit of God putting on the garments of flesh to redeem men from the destructive power of carnality. Eye for an Eye, Flesh for Flesh, Hope for despair, healing for disease, direction for confusion, beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning and whatever the problem there is a corresponding solution found in the revelation of Christ.

Think about the many things God has done for you in your life. Get a picture in your mind of this. Arm yourself with the sword of a miraculous memory. Equip your life with the prophetic words you have received and read. Catch a glimpse of a victorious savior shaking the worlds and bringing all men to bow the knee even to confession of his Lordship.

No matter your situation. God has a Special work he can and will bring to bear.

Just thinking about the only God and Saviour Jesus Christ!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Jude 1:25
25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Titus 3:4-7
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 2:13
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

1 Tim 2:3-6
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

My Beloved
Song of Solomon 2:8-13, Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9, James 1:17-27, Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

The Pharisees were decent people. They had a program. They regarded the Roman occupation of their land as the judgment of God on Israel. They believed that because of Israels impurity and sin, God was keeping away from them, and thus the Temple was empty of Gods glory and the throne was empty of Davids dynasty. The Pharisees believed that if Israel were righteous, then God would forgive them and come back.

So their strategy was to keep the Laws of Moses very strictly. If the Law told Levites to wash their hands, then all the Jews should wash their hands. If it told them to wash before a sacrifice, then they should wash before eating anything. If it said not to cook a kid in its mothers milk, then never cook meat and milk together at all. This scrupulous kind of righteousness would win again Gods favor, forgiveness, and return. That was their program, and Jesus was their problem, because Jesus wasnt helping. Thats why they were against him. The felt he was keeping God away.

Jesus was saying that God already had come backthat is, in himand that God was already forgiving sins, the sins of the sinners as much as the righteous. Jesus disputed the whole approach to their religious practices. Dont get him wrong. Its not that Jesus denied the value of good works and religious practices. His own brother James, the author of our Epistle, certainly did not hear him to say that. His point is that our religious practices and our good works are not where we connect with God. Its in our souls where we connect with God. Your soul is what must be clean for God, no matter how clean your hands may be or how holy your practices.

You have a soul. You are a soul. You know yourself as a body, with a certain look and a certain height and a certain weight, but you need to know yourself as a soul. Your soul is the most important thing about you. The business of your soul is the most important business that you have. You need to cultivate your soul. The cleaning of your soul, the grooming of your soul, the care and feeding of your soul, the exercising of your soul, this is the most important thing you do each day.

When you get up in the morning, how long do you take to get ready? How much time do you need to make your breakfast, to shower, to groom yourself in front of the mirror, to get dressed? How much time do you give to your morning workout, or your visit to the gym? Such things are good to do, your body is a gift of God to you, you should honor it and care for it and rejoice in it. It is meant someday to live forever before the face of God. But how much time do you give to the grooming and feeding of your soul?

The cultivation of our bodies has benefits discernible and immediate. We feel good when we eat and when were clean. When we look good we get compliments. But the payoff from the cultivation of our souls is never so discernible nor immediate. The soul is something of a mystery, even for those who are most spiritual. Indeed, the more you know your soul, the more mysterious it is. Thats from the very nature of the soul itself, its from the way it was designed by God. The soul is designed for transcendence, it is designed to reach beyond the boundaries of sound and sight and sense, your soul is grounded in your mind but it reaches beyond your mind.

Your soul is the leading organ of your body. The soul is the organ that gives the definition to our species. What the nose is for the dog, and what ears for the bat, and eyes for the eagle, so the soul is the special organ given to our species for the distinct vocation of our specieswe are the animals designed for spirituality, for transcendence, for the beyond. The Bible sees our species as among the animals, its as plain as Noahs Ark, but yet we have a special place and office among the animals. The Epistle of James says that we are a kind of first fruits of Gods creatures. We are those creatures that are dedicated to God, that are set aside for God, for special attention to God, for a special relationship to God.

In our culture today we see a reawakening to transcendence and a revival of spirituality. Yet so much of this spirituality is self-absorbed. Its the soul turned in on itself. Its all about self-empowerment and discovering ones own divinity. This fashionable approach to spirituality is like looking in a mirror, to use the metaphor of James 1:24. You can look and look but when you look away you disappear, you cannot be at rest in your own self alone, you can only rest in God. Why gaze in the mirror when you can look at your Beloved? Truest love is not the love of self but the love of someone other than yourself, someone who is always other than yourself.

Our souls belong to us but they are not designed for ourselves. We are designed for God. St. Augustine said, "Thou has made us for thyself, O God, and our souls are restless till they find their rest in thee." Our souls are lost and wandering until we find our true goal and our proper object. The proper purpose of our souls is our relationship with God. Your soul is that organ of your body which directs your body to live for God. Your soul is meant to animate your body and calibrate your feelings and integrate your actions and motivate your mind. But it can only do this if it is directed beyond yourself. Your soul cannot be satisfied until it is satisfied with God.

God is your souls Beloved, and your soul is the Beloved of God. Your soul is the handmaiden of God. In the Bible, the soul is regarded as feminine, even the souls of men. This is a wonderful and healing metaphor, for men as well as women, in different ways. I want to be clear that it is metaphorical and not essential, because finally God has no sexuality, God is a Spirit, God is neither male nor female, so the femininity of our souls is finally a metaphor, but it is a metaphor which God has given as a gift to us.
Its a great gift to feel your soul as a she, and to be able to identify with the Virgin Mary, and to sing with her, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden." I am the Virgin who becomes a mother, I am a handmaiden who becomes a lover, I am the servant who becomes a Beloved. I am my beloveds and my Beloveds mine.

I close with words from James: Welcome with meekness the implanted word that has power to save your souls. The saving of your souls he means is not just when you die, but for today. The word of God has power to keep our souls alive, and more, to give us abundant life. The word of God is the food of your soul. And God desires to feed us. God loves us. God loves your soul. So it doesnt depend on us, except that we open ourselves to God. It is all gift. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a find of first fruits of his creatures.

5 Pillars of Forgiveness
Matthew 6:14-15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oscar Wilde once said, Always forgive your enemies nothing annoys them so much. With that said, forgiveness is one of those things we do that can help a person recover and be restored to relationships. Jesus said that we are to be peacemakers and one of our tools is supposed to be is forgiveness. When you look up the word in the dictionary it reads, To grant free pardon or remission of any offense or debt; to give up all claim. That last part may be difficult. Some are willing to say, I forgive you, but want to claim a grudge or say in their heart, I am keeping my eye on you. Today, we will look at the five pillars of forgiveness as a means of learning how to use this tool more effectively.

First -- Forgiveness Is A Command Not A Suggestion.
Forgiveness is a blessing when done. Note that in the Lords prayer we read in verse 12: And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Preceding this is the text that says, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. What is Gods will? His will is that men be forgiven of their sins. Not just the sins between man and God but also between each other. This is why Jesus says, after teaching this prayer, For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you (v. 14). The blessing is that when we forgive, we are in fellowship with God. The lines are kept open. He hears our prayers. We are in line with His purpose and He can work through us.

Unforgiveness is a barrer when we fail to disobey: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. A failure to give closes the door to His blessings. Think about this for a moment. A failure to forgive leads the door open for division. This is especially true in the church. Note Pauls comments concerning two women who were not reconciled in Philippi:

I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. (Philippians 4:2-3)

Forgiveness is a priority to be done. So a failure to forgive one another in the body of Christ is a poor witness of our love. It becomes a toehold for the devil. This is why Jesus teaches that forgiveness must be a priority in Matthew 5:23-24:

Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

It is so important that worship must stop. Why? God will not accept your worship until it is done!

Second There Is No Limit To Forgiveness.
Is there a limit to forgiving a person? How about you? Do you want to be forgiven every time you fail and realize you blew it? Do you want to be separated from your loved ones forever because they failed to forgive you for the 15th time for forgetting to take out the trash? In Matthew 18 we have question presented by Peter about how many times we should forgive:

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. (Matthew 18:21-22)

Jesus uses exaggeration to make His point. It would be a burden to keep a list of 490 sins to forgive. For me, it would be better to keep on forgiving. It would be the loving act to forgive because per 1 Corinthians 13:5 we have this interesting comment: love thinketh no evil. The word for think means to logically make an account. The New American Standard Bible translates it: does not take into account a wrong [suffered,] and the NIV says, keeps no record of wrongs. An evil person would keep an account in order to get even. A Christian does not.

There is no limit to sins forgiven. In my search of the Bible, there is only one sin that God will not forgive unbelief. It is called the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Why? The Holy Spirit comes to convict the sinner of sin in such a way that the sinner will either repent of sin or reject the Spirit and thus die unforgiven. God loves you and me so much it is His desire that we are forgiven of sins between Him and us. Therefore, because we are commanded to love one another, we must be moved by love to forgive. In 1Peter 4:8, we read: And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. The word charity there is the Greek Agapao for unselfish love. Modern translations will read love covers a multitude of sins. All sins can be covered. Moses was a murderer and God reached him. Saul of Tarsus may have murdered a Christian as part of his persecution and Christ saved him. Jesus forgave a woman caught in adultery. The Samaritan woman by the well was living with a man, not her husband, and Jesus reached out to her.

Sins are to be forgotten. Note what the Lord does for you and me when we are forgiven:

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (Ps 103:10-12)

He expects us to do the same!

Third Unforgiveness Holds Us In Bondage.
Unforgiveness is subject to judgment. Look at verses 23 thru 25 of Matthew 18. A man owed a huge debt and he was not able to pay. He was judged for a failure to pay debts. When you and I fail to forgive, we are placed in a similar position. Sin is judged. All sin is judged and the penalty of sin is always death. Death was something we could not pay because we were less than perfect. We all came short in the payment. Jesus is teaching His disciples a lesson designed to remind them of the difference between the world and His kingdom. The judgment was to be sold to another. Folks, we escaped the bondage of sin when we are saved. We are not to be in service of anyone but Jesus Christ. Unforgiveness allows Satan and his forces to entrap you and me.

Unforgiveness subjects us to torment. In verse 34 this man was delivered to his tormenters for failing to forgive another. People who are in financial difficulties will often become depressed. They are filled with worry. Think of what unforgivness does to you and me. We become anxious. We focus too much on the supposed hurt or what is owed us. It can go on and on. It removes us from serving the Lord. It can open the door to mental illness and further torment by satanic forces.

Unforgivness subjects us to bitterness. In our text this man was a bitter man. Look at how he treated the one who owed him a small amount. He put the man in prison. He did not act like someone who had been freed of a huge price. He did not show respect for the forgiveness shown him. No wonder the master came along and dealt with this man. Though he was free from debt, he was never free from the bondage of sin.

Since I have spoken this truth to you, we must move to the fourth pillar which helps free us from the bondage of the sin of unforgiveness...

Fourth -- Forgiveness Is A Willing Act.
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled (Heb. 12:15)

There is a principle found in this verse that will help us. When we are in the state of unforgiveness we are failing in the grace of God. So forgiveness is not based upon our feelings but a biblical decision. Emotion should never drive our decisions. Note again Hebrews 12:15. It warns of bitterness springing up and leading to trouble. The Bible is clear forgiveness is not based on how you feel but what is right in the eyes of God. You can honestly tell the person you are forgiving, Your actions hurt me. Your words caused me pain.

Thus forgiveness requires constant vigilance on our part. The words looking diligently speak of the alertness we need to have. Sometimes the vigilance requires looking into the past. I have known people to bear grudges for years. If suddenly you discover that an action you did a few years ago is causing some hurt today, deal with it. Seek forgiveness and reconciliation. One of the saddest scenes is the funeral service where members of the family show up and are not only in grief but further saddened that they never reconciled some issue with the deceased.

Let us remember that the act of forgiveness is always relational. The person you forgive is a living human being. We are not to look at the person as an enemy and we must remember that the Bible teaches that we are to love God, each other, our neighbor, and even our enemies.

Lastly Our Fifth Pillar: Reconciliation Is Always The Answer.

Do not follow the example of Judas Iscariot. He led the authorities to arrest Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. And what did he do? He never forgave himself. He never sought forgiveness. He drove himself to deep despair and suicide.

Follow the example of Jesus Christ. Peter rejected Jesus Christ three times. Did that stop the Lord from seeking reconciliation with Peter? No. Peter did not want to remain unforgiven and Jesus was willing to reach out and restore this man to His service. Listen to the words of Paul to the Roman church: Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not (Ro. 12:14). It is a different mindset! When people do attempt to persecute and curse, we are to respond with a blessing. The greatest blessing for many people besides salvation will be the restoring medicine of forgiveness. When Jesus hung on the cross He saw the soldiers casting lots for His robe. Note His words: Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34).

Conclusion. We know what to do. We are to be peacemakers. We are commanded to forgive. Forgiveness has no limits. A failure to forgive keeps us in bondage. Forgiveness is always a willful act in line with the Bible. And finally, reconciliation is always the answer. Remember, God forgave us first:

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life (Ro. 5:10).

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. (2 Cor. 5:18,20)

As you are forgiven, now go forgive others!

Universal Life Church

Have you ever wondered how all the loose ends would be pulled together?  In the past few months I have been watching God pull the connections of my life together in the most beautiful way. I look at it as a tapestry of faith.

I marvel at how God orders our steps and directs our lives. We are rarely aware the significance of events as they happen or people that our paths cross.

Do you believe that God has a purpose for your life? Look around you. Examine the people and look deeply. Realize they are made in the image of God, as you are. You may not see it now, but these that you are reaching may one day in fact be a needed blessing to you in the days and even years to come.

Cast your bread upon the water.

I recently was made aware of a young couple I know were in the midst of transition. I called them told them I was praying in their behalf and gave a few names to contact. As I was getting off the phone, this person said to me, "I really appreciate it." My response to him was, "I have always heard it said, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If I were in your situation I would want someone to help me."

As I pondered this, I realize that I have many times been in this situation in some degree and God has always had someone there to help. I want to encourage you to help those you know you can. Don't be so wrapped up in your own life that you neglect to do good things for others.

It will come back to you. Without doubts in time every good thing you do will come rolling back into your life. The other day, not sure how it came up, but my wife and I were talking about what we want people to say about us when we are 80 years old. I told her, "I want people to cry when I die." It would be my desire that I could be a blessing to people that when I am gone, I would be missed. If you come to my funeral fifty years from now, don't shout, bring a box of tissues.

All jesting aside, the same God that orders the events of morning and evening, orders your steps every day. The days are so regulated that you can set your clock to it and track it on a calendar. This same God is doing what he can to order your affairs if you will work with him, wait on him and trust him.

Life with all of it's connections and circumstances are the substance that our life is made of.

Almighty God will pull all of this together, what you thought of as loose ends and scattered moments to assemble a wonderful picture that is your life.

Be encouraged enough to encourage someone else. Blessings we give have strings attached. They will come back to you when you need them most.

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Universal Life Church

The Right Church?

Heb 11:10 (NIV)10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

I have recently reached what to me is a startling conclusion but one I feel sure is quite realistic. In this life there are no perfect anythings. Only Jesus is perfect. We live in a fallen world. There is especially no perfect church nor will there be until Jesus returns. In fact, that is a blessing! We need the imperfections to help us grow. We need to face the difficulties the imperfections present to see how much we need to change, how much we need Jesus to be head of the church and deal with those problems.

Any church you attend is a human organization. By that I mean, we set up a structure of some kind for the purpose of making things orderly. Even the very charismatic churches that claim they are led only by the Spirit and have no plan, fall into patterns that take the place of a bulletin. This is not a bad thing but we do need to recognize that the structure is man made thing. Denominations have thick books that explain their structure, backed by Scripture of course. Funny how there are so many variations all backed by Scripture. We all would like to believe the way we worship is the one best way, the best organization, pattern, the one closest to Scripture, but lets be honest. One man on fire with an anointing from God started the pattern and those who came after pretty much stuck with it. That is true in almost every group. Heres the rub, what was a most fitting way for that leader and his converts to worship may not be the best for that group today. What helped them focus on the Lord Jesus then may be of little help in todays changing world. The Father is looking for people to worship Him in Spirit and truth. Not a particular style, not a particular pattern, not even all the right doctrines. Truth is a person the man Christ Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life and the only way to the Father.

God is preparing a bride for Jesus but the work is not finished. She is the church. It includes people throughout time in many of these organizations of man but just because you attend one of them does not mean you are a part of the bride. Since she is still in preparation we can expect changes will need to be made, problems will arise, until the preparation is completed. Last week we talked about how God uses suffering to increase our capacity for Christ, our dependency on Him. Some of the greatest suffering comes through our fellowship with believers. We expect more of those we are closest to. We give more, and invest more, and so we bear our heart more, thus opening up ourselves to be hurt more deeply.

In the very best organized church, what do you have but growing believers. That means at times they will be walking in the flesh. It may be religious flesh but it is still flesh and the works of the flesh will result. I thought if a group of believers really understood the Word and were filled with the Spirit we would have a kind of heaven on earth where multitudes are finding Christ and growing. There would be no problems or conflict and all would have the same understanding of Gods will and direction. Wouldnt that be nice? Well, it may be a great thought but if you look carefully at the early church you find that only partly the case.

There are people in that first century church complaining, lying, slandering, factions, arguments, competition, personal preference, lust, greed, and false teachers. That kind of changes my perspective. If they were there then why would they be missing today?

So why does God allow the tares to grow up amongst the wheat as Jesus put it? What purpose does that serve? I think it is part of the chink chink chink we talked about, the shaping of the stones. We are on our way to glory to the expression of the attributes of God. We see reflections of the glory of God in the fruits of the Spirit in the lives of our brothers and sisters, or we could say we meet Christ in each other at times. But the perfect consistency of His expressing his life in us must wait till we see Him and the work is completed, the temple is finished.

Solomon said, 2Chron 2:6 But who is able to build a temple for him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain him? Who then am I to build a temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before him?

Solomon recognized he could not build a Temple for God to inhabit. All he could do was make the shadow of the temple to come, a place where sacrifice is offered to God. The true temple, the one God desires, is being built by the builder of everything, Jesus. (Heb 3:3,4) And the sacrifice is a broken and contrite heart. Mt 16:18 I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The building is still under construction, and the Master Builder is Jesus. When youre building there is always a mess. Chips of block, pieces of board, nails here and there, sawdust everywhere. That is the church today.

Our transformation metamorphoo is not complete. That word implies a change of the very nature. There is another Greek word for a change in style or outer form but metamorphoo is a change in the very nature. Since it is not complete we get lazy in our Spiritual walk, we are tempted and yield to the flesh and in that flesh there is no good thing. We criticize and put down a brother because we are proud. We argue our position and perspective not out of love but out of a desire to be superior. The Spirit points out our failure to walk humbly before our God. And so the chink chink chink continues. One of the biggest distractions in the church is wanting everyone to see my revelation and walk according to it. The Spirit reveals something to me and I feel it is my job to convince everyone that this revelation is something they should see and walk in. I forget the LORD is their Shepherd, and a Great Shepherd at that. I can share - but only the Spirit can bring revelation. John 6:63 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. John 16:13-14 (NIV)13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

If Jesus speaks the word through you, if what you shared is Jesus, then those words will bring life. If they are your own, dont expect to see any results.

Like the early church we face times when a person should be expelled from our midst because of unrepentant and blatant sin. Most church organizations today dont even bother to do this and they wonder why the leaven grows and spreads throughout the congregation. There are those who would be sympathetic and those who would be even harsher. Either way we have to learn to seek the LORD together and set aside our fleshly personalities and look to what the Holy Spirit is speaking.

But the most common is the idol of personal preference. We mask it very well with religious vocabulary, expressions like, Ill pray over that. Another is, I think the LORDs will is when the reality is we are arguing for our own personal experience and comfort zone, or maybe even our personal vision. We come from different backgrounds with different experiences and so it is inevitable that we will see things differently. If we saw it all exactly the same not only would it be weird, but we wouldnt grow much. It is through the clash of trials and differences that we grow. Just as we relate to Christ by laying down our desires to be filled with his, in the body we must do the same together. But when one or two insist on a personal agenda it can bring the whole church to a stand still. Too many churches today have a church boss. He is usually the biggest giver, volunteers to be the head of committees, and has a following of those who have come under his influence. He knows what he wants and will talk tough to get it. Oh how sad and how detrimental to churches desiring to grow in Christ likeness. Still God is at work trying to raise up men who will stand up to the person in a Christ-like way, men who will lovingly and in the Spirit say what needs to be said. The problem exists because too many men have weak spiritual lives and are too flabby in the word to carry conviction. Some are too afraid of confrontation. Confrontation is a good thing when it is done in the Spirit. Matthew 23 is confrontation from Jesus that spoke to the heart of the Pharisees, challenging them to look at the heart of their religiosity and repent. That took love enough to speak the truth and face rejection and persecution.

Every time I heard of a church that seemed to have it all together, when I talked to individuals I found that was not at all the case. So then what are we to do? We must do what we are to do in our daily relationships, in our differences in convictions, -seek the mind of the LORD. Where does He want us to worship? What is important enough to have you look for another church? The basics of who Jesus is and what He has done most definitely for you must have that to have a gathering of believers around Him. But what else should give you reason to look for another place? I think beyond that basic framework the fundamentals of our faith we should be in submission to the Spirit. Who can make a list that would apply to everyone in every situation? There is such diversity in the church today and so many factions but Jesus is the One that makes us one.

What we should not leave a fellowship over is personal taste. If I dont like a person, a style, a procedure, if an individual offends me, I should grow in Christ, not leave. If there are doctrines I dont agree with, I must decide how fundamental those doctrines are. Can I still gather around Jesus and worship? Calvanist, Armenian, pretrib, post, dichotamist, trichotamist, who cares as long as Jesus is your Lord and Savior and it is Him that we have come to worship. Dont allow yourself to be personally offended because someone does not share your opinion. Listen, and try to understand knowing you have been wrong before and could be again. Keep an open mind within the boundary of Scripture. Thank God for differences that help us learn to get along when we dont agree. We still have the same Savior. Jesus said we should do more than get along, we should love. Dont pack it up unless the LORD leads you as clearly to move on as He did when He led you there.

If you think it is not deep enough for you, you have missed the Holy Spirit. He is the one that makes it deep and illuminates the word. I have heard some horrendous preaching and yet seen people blessed. I have done some horrendous preaching and yet seen people hear from the Lord. Isnt it amazing? There are times when I feel terrible about the message and afterwards someone comments on how it was one of the best messages theyd heard in a long time.

If you come to worship, dont let your flesh, or anyone elses stop you and you will meet with Jesus. Are there dead churches? Of course and the Holy Spirit will either keep you there to bring about change or move you on. Wait on Him to direct.

It is Jesus we come to worship. If we are focussed on Him the differences in the little issues will fade into insignificance. Only when each member is focussed on Him can we have any sense of unity. As soon as we turn our eyes on an individual or a doctrine or preference we will have differences. Those are tools in the Lord's hands to teach us humility and to prefer our brothers. Phil 2:1-4 (NIV)1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

The letter of Philippians was written to the brothers and sisters in Philippi who were at odds with each other. Euodia and Syntyche were sisters who labored with the Apostle Paul, but they had let pride separate them and gotten upset with each other. Good sisters Paul even says they contended at his side for the sake of the gospel. Notice Paul doesnt pick sides or lay down the trump of his Apostleship to settle whatever their issue was, but just pleads with them to get along. You are bound to have differences, that is a gift of God to increase your capacity to Jesus who made himself the servant of all. It gives us a chance to express the life of Jesus in us.

In the Roman epistle it appears there were two fellowships in the same city. It was two large to meet under one roof. See Romans 16:14,15 During the ministry of Watchman Nee in Shanghai there were a number of fellowships that met in homes and church buildings, each small group being led by an elder. When persecution came spies were sent to the meetings. Watchmen Nee told the parable of the glass. He said if you take glass and smash it, it will become many small pieces. Some can be broken again, but all the small pieces are still glass. The believers understood that even though they could not meet in large groups, to corporately worship you only need two or three believers. The spies thought he was babbling.

That was quite a change in style, in the organization that the brothers had established, but it is the way the church would survive and go on even under the watchful eye of the government. If church organizations are outlawed, will you have church? Now we are getting down to what it really is to have church: believer with believer bowing to worship the living Lord Jesus, trying to see him more clearly together, discerning his leading together, encouraging each other. That is why we should gather. I pray that each Sunday before you come you will have that heart, Im going to worship my Lord with my brothers and sisters! I know He will speak through them in their testimonies and experiences. What will the Spirit speak to me this morning and what would He have me share of our walk together this week?

I am afraid that with many corporate worship is optional. If persecution came and banned gatherings they would simply quit meeting. Sheep gather in flocks. Body parts are meant to be united to a body. A family is meant to be a unite. The parts of a house are connected one to another. These are the pictures Jesus used to describe his church (called out ones). The very word implies called out to an assembly. It may be two or three, but that is where Jesus is.

This morning I want you to consider what we are doing. We have structure. I like the way we meet but this style can come or go. We have patterns and style which both can change. But we are here to worship Jesus. That is all that really matters, and that is what cannot change. That is why I ask you what He has shown you this week. That is why we sing. That is why we have communion. That is why we meet at all. We belong together. If the Lord leads you to another fellowship in this city, that is His call, not yours, not mine, but the Great Shepherds who knows where you will best grow up into his likeness. Be aware that He is not leading us to a perfect place but to a place where we can be perfected. Chink chink chink that is not a comfortable sound, but it is an encouraging sound. It is the sound of struggles in fellowship conforming me, transforming me, to His image. Will you say, Hammer away, Lord Jesus.

I think you see how the last weeks message and this one go together. We need to value the difficulties for what they produce in our lives. We need to see the hand of the Lord in them, to count it all joy, not run or ask for immediate solution. Look to your heart and see what the LORD is working on there. Go to his Word and see where your image is not conformed to his. Hammer away, Lord Jesus. We rejoice in your faithfulness to work on us.

Zech 6:12-13 (NIV)12 Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.13 It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.'

King Jesus is building the Temple its a mess, but He is the master Craftsman. The work will be completed there will be harmony between his reigning Supreme (the organization and rule) and his priestly work (spiritual life). Lets trust Him to build as He sees fit and complete it in his time.

The Faith of Sheep

It is an intriguing thought to consider a prevailing theme throughout scripture, that being the theme as the Lord being a shepherd and his people being sheep. Without a doubt this is a product of the fact that two of the major characters of scripture spent their formative years tending sheep, giving them a unique view and perspective on this symbiotic relationship.

As I prayed Psalms 23 this morning, I turned in my Bible to this passage that is favored by all of his sheep. One thing that struck me as I read, prayed and imagined the implications of this psalm, were these statements of declaration and the sheer positive force in each and every word.

When you read the psalm below notice the forceful words and declarations for what they are. This is not the words of a man wondering if he was going to be alright or if God loved him. These are words of a man who knows his God and his ability to see him through to the end. As I read these words, it struck me with such a powerful force; the simplistic faith of the Lords Sheep. I truly believe from experience this faith springs from the heart of sheep when they have been walking by the shepherd. These are not lessons appreciated when you are on the edge of the flock, wondering beyond his voice to reach you. These are words of a sheep that found the shadow of the Shepherd.

Ps 23:1-6
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Today, remember a few simple lessons of the sheep.

First, the Lord is the Shepherd and a good shepherd at that.

The Lord will give you rest and refreshment.

He is a God of Restoration that will lead you into places of righteousness.

No matter the shadow of suffering that may cross your path, you have nothing to fear, for his Rod and his staff protect you from the desires of your enemies. If the Devil could get you, you would have done been got.

He is a God of abundant provision.

He is a God that will anoint your head, inspire your mind, protect your thoughts and prosper your way.

And hear these last words of a sheep that knows his shepherd.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

It is my desire today to walk in the shadows of this my Shepherd.

In Him, by Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips
