How To Have Mountain-Moving Faith

I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. (Matt. 17:20)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received an email the other day with a story of a person traveling to a mountain range in Canada. The person entered the valley and was hit with the beauty of all the flowers. They were not wild flowers. There was someone or some people who had taken time to plant all those flowers. It was ablaze with color. At the local restaurant the traveler asked the waitress if the town had paid for the planting of the flowers. She said no and told the story of a lady who was now in her seventies who planted each and every bulb. As a little girl this woman had vowed to plant flowers in this valley. Every day she would buy a few bulbs and go plant. Every day she would set aside a few coins. Over 60 years of patient planting produced a portrait of beautiful flowers.

What about you? Is there something in your life that needs to be accomplished but you believe that the challenges soar above you like the Rocky Mountains? Let me ask you, How did these United States of America in the 1960s begin to have a dream of flying a man to the moon? Consider all of those obstacles and the technology of that time. Computers then filled rooms and had much less memory. We did not have the metals and plastics then that we have now. What happened? Faith!

Jesus Christ taught that all you need is a little bit of faith. Jesus was stating this in a middle of a discussion as to why his disciples could not cast out a particularly strong demon from a child. So He says, However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. So lets break it all down. Let me give you a few steps that you can begin to put into practice and have mountain moving faith.

First Begin Small. Did you realize that all big corporations, big movements, and big changes all begin with a small idea or group of people? Dell computers started in a dorm room. Subway began an idea of a father given to his sons so they could earn money at college. Abrahams faith in God makes him the father of three major religions today: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Consider Jesus parable of the talents. He tells of a master who gives his servants some funds to manage. Two of them double the investment and one hides his one talent. The two who managed their small amounts are rewarded. Note the commendation:

"His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord (Matt. 25:23).

George Washington Carver was a brilliant scientist and a Christian. I read once where he prayed to God to let him study the peanut and learn everything about it. He would develop 300 applications for the peanut that we use today.

Second - Be Persistent. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. Persistence is a key to moving mountain faith. The people who get to the top in their sports do so because they persist. Persistence in noted in the daily practice of a skill. It is witnessed in the ability to accept each failure as a lesson learned. Every inventor who successes with on great idea will have thousands of failures behind him or her. My son played high school football and his junior year his team went all the way to the state championship were they lost. The coach turned their frowns into cheers when he told them, Do not look at this as a failure. Only two teams make it to the state level. And you are one of them! You made it to the show! You have nothing to be ashamed of. It was a close game. Either team could have won. Persistence helps us to keep going. In the movie, Rudy, the main character had a desire to play for Notre Dames football team. He did not have the grades or the money to go to Notre Dame. He was small in size but he had a big dream. Persistence led him to find ways to make it to the team.

Third - Be Patient. Patience is the twin sister of persistence. Patience is the attitude of the mind. The book of James teaches us: But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:4). Patience gives perspective to a challenge. It helps us to slow down, to observe, and to avoid mistakes. Proverbs teaches us: The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty (Prov. 21:5).

Fourth Be Prepared. Praying and fasting are means of preparation for mountain moving faith. The prayer aspect is seeking Divine will, strength, cleansing of the soul, and increasing sensitivity to the move of God in moving mountains. Fasting is simply denial. It is self-sacrificing. This is gets to the foundation of moving mountains. A young girl dreams of being a figure skating and winning the gold medal at the Olympics. This means practice. It also means giving up time and certain pleasure her friends enjoy. It means she makes practice a priority over Girl Scouts, parties, and even some vacations. It means following the instructions of coaches and parents. It means giving up candy and junk food (not a bad idea!) for a healthy diet. It also means that when opportunity arises to go!

Conclusion. Mountain moving faith is hard work. But we must remember the Wisdom of Solomon who writes, The end of a thing is better than its beginning (Eccl. 7:8). We need to keep the end in focus when we step into mountain moving faith. So

Begin Small.

Be Persistent.

Be Patient and

Be Prepared

Universal Life Church

The following came to me in prayer the other afternoon. It was as if I could see a swirling cloud that looked like a hand that was rising and reaching into the heavens. Reaching, Reaching and finally connecting with another greater hand that came down from heaven. This smoke was coming out of a room.

The Room that is You

When David sat on the backside of a Judean hillside playing his psalms of praise, lost to his own thoughts and forgotten by his father, what did God see?

When David stood their shocked and surprised as the oil dripped off his chin and splattered on the dirt floor at his feet, what did God know?

In another time and setting, Noah is offering a sacrifice to God of the Clean fowl and beast, and this sacrifice ascended into the presence of God as a sweet smelling savor, what caused God to declare a covenant and a token of the same? What did God see when he looked at Noah on this day?

Humanity is bound up and is surrounded by a reality that does not affect God. This undeniable power and fact of our existence is time. So often we don't think of the past or the future because it is yesterday and the other we do not know. So we plunge headlong into the moments of life only thinking of the present. However God does not see us this way.

I like to think of our lives and how God sees them as articles and objects in a room. The milestones in our lives that happened in time, I see them as unique objects in the room that is our life. Because we are so time conscious, and the present is always so pressing it causes us to reach, stretch and strain to get in touch with that presence of God. This presence is beyond the present, it is an Eternal Spirit. The Eternal Spirit that we know as God.

You know what I think God saw when David thought he was alone and forgotten? Or when he was listening to the bellowing blaspheme of a Giant named Goliath? Or when he stood stock still looking at a man that wanted to kill him? God saw David in his finest moment. I think that was when David escorted the Ark of God back into Jerusalem dancing in a linen ephod with all his might bringing the presence of God into it's rightful place.

Noah standing their on that mountain that day offering a sacrifice God was not overly impressed with the clean birds burning and swirling smoke rising, but it was the essence of the man, the spirit of the man that came into the nostrils of God that caused him to say, "That smells so Good."

Noah working on a boat in a world that did not need boats, propelled by a purpose that was not logical in his time, but made perfect sense to God. Noah had heard from the Eternal presence of God, and that voice gave him a connection to be able to build an ark that took him one hundred and twenty years to build. In a generation that cannot perceive ten years, this man waited one hundred and twenty years building an object that had absolutely no purpose until it rained. He worked on it everyday, because the weather never interfered.

This man that devoted his life to a divine word from God that was so outlandish that the whole world did not believe him. Today you can gather a crowd that believe in UFO's and Aliens with no proof, and Noah could not even get one person out of his family to be saved. Home Missions might be tough, however I don't know anyone who would judge Noah as successful in today's world. Give him his due; his family was saved.

So here is Noah offering a sacrifice, I really don't think God was looking at Noah in the present, but he was looking at "NOAH" the man, the life, the sacrifice, the obedience, the prayer, the message, the perseverance?Noah was the savor that God accepted.

In David, all Samuel could see was a young kid that smelled like sheep, but God saw a him dancing in an ephod and all of Isreal following his lead.

God sees us for who we were, are and will be. I believe in spite of his foreknowledge, every living soul gets the same grace and opportunity. However for those that will be found called, chosen and faithful, God knows.

You know why I think people fail God, throw in the towel and cease to serve God? They forget about the fact that we are but a vapor or if a may a misty cloud that carries qualities that can please or displease God. They cease to hear the voice that Noah heard as he kept working. People cease to see beyond the moment and become blinded and die a spiritual death to that connection that should not be severed, that connection to eternity.

Sure David demonstrated his failure. However, his failure was an event and not the essence of who he was. Like many of us, we all have events that demonstrate that we have come short.

When God looks at us, it is not simply a linear timeline, but a three dimensional history or if I may repeat the concept, a room. We choose what we represent by the objects we bring into our room and at times get out of our rooms when we realize it does not belong.

When I get down on my knees and pray, I don't believe that the only thing that God hears are those simple words of the moment, but that he hears a chorus of not only my prayers, but the prayers of the tens and maybe even thousands of people that have prayed, wept, fasted and cared for me. They have filled my room with that eternal incense that is prayer. Prayers never die, the saint may die, but the spiritual influence is an element that never leaves us.

In these moments when we interact with Eternity, I believe God looks down on our "room" and will rearrange, alter or maybe just watch over us as we strain in our sojourn in time. In eternity, these things will be different, but now we are in the here and now. Only God knows how we will be able to appreciate "now" when we see it as he does.

To think that when God uses his "white out" it only erases your sins and not your victory. When he looks at the history of your life, he sees your vistas of victory and not your valleys of defeat. How else could the New Testament say that Abraham did not stagger and include Samson in the role call of faith?

Your failures don't have to be final. Your mistake does not forever stay on your record. But your sacrifice is never forgotten. Your labor of love is not overlooked. Your sacrificial offering is still on the ledger book. Your forsaking love, fortune and fame to follow the call of God, that blessing is still accumulating interest in your account.

Look at the room that is your life. Dust the objects of past victory and replay the prophetic utterances you have received. Reread the journal of your journey. You too have a Giants sword wrapped in an ephod. There is a pot of manna of God's provision, there is a rod that proves your priesthood and yes don't forget God's covenants are as real as if he wrote them with his finger on your heart.

If you have been discouraged or distressed? find a dark room, turn off the phone, lose your cell shut down the computer, pull the blind and ask, seek, knock, pray, walk, meditate, rehearse, remember, stir up and cry out to the God that has brought you this far. That Eternal spirit that touched you before, reach out and let that holy hand of the most high touch you again.

This all came to me in prayer the other afternoon. It was as if I could see a swirling cloud that looked like a hand that was rising and reaching into the heavens. Reaching, Reaching and finally connecting with another greater hand that came down from heaven. This smoke was coming out of a room.

I am that room. So are you.

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

The Word of Truth

Legends, Fairy Tales, Truth or Traditions

Acts 3:1-8 (KJV)

1 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.

2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;

3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms.

4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.

5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.

What do you see in this scripture?

Some of you would say "faith" while others would say "boldness" Still others might respond "the power of God" "spiritual gifts" or "confidence" I've asked this question of many people over the years and I have yet to hear this reply: "Me"?

The doctrine that Jesus taught His disciples (including Paul) contained no theory. It was all about a way of living. He instructed His followers in discipleship, He counseled them against hypocrisy, and He explained to them the scriptures. Hence, the disciples went forth practicing this same doctrine and teaching others to do so. For this reason, the first century Church knew great power, growth, and authority. They simply believed and obeyed the gospel they received.

When we consider the Church described in the Book of Acts we must ask, "What happened"? How did the Church go from a vibrant, growing assembly of believers (who preached the same message as Jesus and demonstrated His power) to the stagnant, powerless, divided Church we see today? What happened? The answer is simple: sin and compromise.

For example, the military has devised a way to keep missiles from hitting the jets at which they are shot. It's known as a countermeasure. When a jet detects that a missile has it locked on, it begins to release chaff. Chaff is a reflective material like tin foil that creates a cloud behind the jet. The cloud of chaff becomes larger and larger, causing the missile to home in on the center of the cloud. The larger the cloud becomes, the further away from the jet the missile will explode. The missile misses the mark, just as we do when we sin (as we all know that "sin" means "to miss the mark"). The example demonstrates not just what sin is (missing the mark), but possibly more importantly, how it comes to be so prevalent in the Church.

In the example of the missile, the jet represents the truth. When we embrace the "Word of Truth" we hit the mark. As decades and centuries have passed since Jesus and His apostle preached the gospel, a cloud of doctrines and traditions made by men have grown around the Truth. Today, it has become almost impossible to find the Truth as men glorify and promote their doctrines and traditions. However, as in the case of the missile, the jet stayed the same, and so does the Truth. The gospel we believe and preach should be the same as the gospel preached by the apostles. It is not dispensational, it is not a respecter of persons (as though it were just for the early apostles), and it never ever changes. It is timeless!

Where should we worship?

John 4:5-24 (KJV)

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph?

20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

In this story, Jesus comes to a well situated on a mountain that Jacob once owned about 2,000 years before. There He met a woman who needed an answer to her question, the same question men have been asking since the dawn of time: where should we worship?

She explained the argument to Jesus as she understood it. Why do the Jews worship in Jerusalem? There is nothing holy concerning that city. It's just a place that your King David decided to use. Is he greater than Abraham or Jacob?

She was correct in that God was with Abraham and Jacob, and that they did worship God on that mountain. However, God moved on. About 500 years after that, we find God on a different mountain giving the law to Moses, and His people worshiped Him there. But God moved on. About 500 years after that, we find God coming down to inhabit the Temple in Jerusalem. Once again, His people worshipped Him there. But something was about to happen to the Temple. The Veil was about to be ripped from top to bottom, and God was going to move on once again. Jesus spoke this to her when He said, 'the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth."

Throughout history, each time God has moved, men have tried to bottle it and define it as a recipe for success. This is how most denominations have come to be. Great men of faith have walked before us and we seen, heard and marveled at their works and relationships with God. Following them, men attempted to imitate their form of worship in a hope of having what they had. But it is nothing more than an imitation, and God has moved on. As great as men like Luther and Wesley were, they were just men, and they are now dead, just like Abraham, Jacob, and Moses. God does not acknowledge you in your affiliations. If He did, then we should build a church on top of Mount Sinai and worship God there.

Consider this woman's question. She had been so distracted by the religious arguments of the day that she never even noticed that the answer to her question now stood before her. God was in Jesus, and through His son He had returned once again to the mountain where Jacob had served Him in the past. It is not the well, nor the mountain, no place that is special: it is God. It is not the church we attend or the doctrines to which we hold that mean anything. It is all about God.

Like this woman, sometimes believers are so enamored with their buildings and doctrines that they never notice that God is not present in their midst. Is it possible that we have become so lost in the doctrinal discussions of our time that we completely miss the fact that God is not present with us?

Why do we do what we do?

Acts 17:16-23 (KJV)

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Imagine Paul in the marketplace looking to purchase food. A man passes by with a large basket of dates and figs.

"Kind sir, may I purchase some of those dates and figs"? Paul asks.

"No," the man replies briskly, then turns and places the fruit methodically on an altar. Paul cannot help but notice the inscription on the altar: To The Unknown God.

As the man turns to leave, Paul asks him, "What god do you worship here"?

"I don't know," the man responds.

"What's his name?"

"I don't know that either."

"But you do know that he requires dates and figs?"

"No, I don't know that either."

Very puzzled, Paul then asks, "Is there anyone in this city who can answer these questions?"

"Well, I think there was at one time an old man who knew something about this god, but he died before I was born."

By now Paul can hardly contain himself. "Why then do you bring him figs and dates?" "How do you know that is what he wants?"

The man thinks for a moment, then answers, "Well, because my father brought figs and dates and so did his father."

Paul considers this for a moment. "Just what did your father do for a living?"

"Both he and my grand father raised figs and dates, and so do I."

Finally, a bewildered Paul makes this observation: "So you worship -- you don't know what -- a god -- you don't know who -- in a way -- you don't know how."

Ask yourself these questions:

Why do I worship God the way I do?
Why do I serve God the way I do?
Why do I believe the doctrines I do?

Can you answer these questions? Then ask yourself this: do you believe and worship the way you do because that is the way your church does? Have you ever sought out the scriptures to KNOW that you know that the worship, beliefs, and doctrines you hold as sacred are indeed the very gospel Jesus and his disciples taught?

Years ago, when I first became a Christian, I began to see discrepancies between the Bible and the practices of the church I attended. I remember asking my counselor why things were done as they were. His reply is something that I continue to hear from believers to this day: "There are over 100,000 people who are a part of this denomination. If we are wrong, wouldn't you think that someone would notice it?"

Is not this the same argument that each denomination uses? Are they all correct in what and how they practice what they believe? It's not just denominations who believe numbers equate to truth. Even small gatherings of believers can find themselves congregating together around an idea or a man and not around the Word of Truth. We must always come back to this very question: do I hold fast to the doctrine taught by Jesus and his disciples?

The Space Shuttle and ruts in the road

I want to share with you something that is sometimes taught to engineering students. When the opportunity rises, examine a picture of the Space Shuttle. It has a huge tank attached to its underside and two solid fuel rocket boosters (SRBs) attached to the sides of the tank. The solid fuel rocket boosters have been problematic for NASA. Everyone either remembers or has heard of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Challenger exploded minutes after launch because of one of the SRBs. The engineers who designed the Space Shuttle wanted to make the SRBs shorter rather than long and slender (like a pencil). So, let's do the incomprehensible and ask the question: why are the SRBs designed as they are?

As it turns out, the SRBs are manufactured at a factory in Utah. From the plant in Utah, the SRBs are shipped by train to the launch site. To get to the launch site the train must travel through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs must fit through that tunnel, which itself is only slightly wider than the railroad track. So, let's ask the next question: why are railroad tracks the width they are?

Railroads throughout the United States are 4 foot 8.5 inches between the rails. Well, that seems like such an odd number, so let's ask the next logical question: why are they 4 foot 8.5 inches? Because that's the width they were built in England, and it was English immigrants who built the railroads in the United States. This goes all the way back to the 1800's.

Okay, then why did they build the railroads in England to this specification? It turns out that the first railroads were built by the same people who built the tramways (or trolley cars). Okay, so now we're back to the 1700's. Before you ask, the tramways used this same specification (4 foot 8.5 inches) because they were built by the same people who built the wagonways and wagons. Now were back into the 1500?s, still with the same specifications.

Wagonways were nothing more than wagons pulled by horses across a primitive wooden rail system. The people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used to build the wagons and wagonways. Wagons were used for thousands of years and the standard wheel base (4 feet 8.5 inches) has always been the same. I know what you're going to ask next: why were wagons built to this specification?

The first primitive road system in Europe was the ancient Roman road, built primarily for the Roman Legions. These roads were built out of solid rock, and they were about 6 feet deep. Because of their design, they tended to last for centuries, and they were found all over Europe. As it turns out, these roads had grooves that had been worn into them after decades and centuries of use by the wheels of Roman chariots. Therefore, the people who built wagons had to build them so the wagon wheels fit perfectly in the groves. If they did not, the wagon would tear itself apart.

We have now arrived at the last question: why were Roman chariots built to this specification? As it turns out, the Romans built their chariots to be the same width as the two horses that were destined to pull it, that is, 4 feet 8.5 inches. So the next time you see the Space Shuttle ready for launch take a good look at the SRBs and consider the fact that their diameter was determined thousands of years ago by the width of a couple of horses.

Isn't it interesting how one tradition led to the next and the next and the next? One tradition led to a standard. That standard became a rule that eventually became a law. This law is now so engrained into our transportation system that it will probably never be changed. Go to some railroad headquarters and them if they can change the width of railroads. In doing so, trains wouldn't require as many cars to transport goods, and they would not need to be nearly as long. Their reply is predictable: the cost of such a change is too great. Every train and every track across the continent would have to change. It's much easier to leave things as they are.

How much is this like believers of today. I constantly meet believers who struggle with the Word of Truth. They recognize that their lives are not in alignment with the scriptures, but neither are those of the others in their church. If no one else is changing, why should they?

The Sheep Market

John 5:2-9 (KJV)

2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

Now, the Bible never actually says that anyone was ever healed there. The man suggests they were when he said, "when the water is troubled. another steppeth down before me (John 5:7)." Remember the (Catholic) stories of the children and women who have reported to have seen the virgin Mary at a particular place? What followed each of these encounters is that the spot eventually becomes a shrine, a spot where miracles are alleged to take place for centuries that follow. Now I ask you, is this God's way? Does God tend to select a parcel of ground and then bless it? If so, maybe we should build a church on Mount Sinai where God first met Moses, where the law was given, and where His covenant was made with man. Surely, that must be a holy place, no?

Perhaps it goes more like this: a prophet once stood in that very spot and said, "One day a man will come here and trouble the waters of Israel. He who steps into the water will find rest, but he who waits will know no peace." Then followed years, decades, and quite possibly even centuries of the story being told and retold until it eventually came to take on a completely different meaning. First, it was a "man sent from God." Later it became "a messenger from God," and eventually "an angel of the Lord." Finally, the story became that that very spot that was blessed and destined to become a shrine for the Divine (rhyme not intended). What if that was not what the prophet had intended at all? What if it was a prophecy about Christ that men had enshrined (they have a habit of doing that)? Going a step further, what if from time to time, as wind whipped across the water, people claimed to see an angel. Then through the hysteria of the moment as people pushed, shoved, clawed, and screamed while trying to enter, someone would claim healing. Have we today ever heard or witnessed anything like that?

Perhaps over the course of time, men became enamored with their traditions and legends, and the original prophecy was completely lost. Perhaps what they came to accept as truth had no foundation in the truth at all. Perhaps the original word became so misinterpreted that, when the prophecy was fulfilled, no one there understood. It is quite possible that Jesus came as the man who troubled the waters of Israel, and we know that there were those who freely accepted Him as Lord and those who drew back.

Try to imagine what it would have been like. Jesus shows up as that messenger of the Lord and the one who troubles the waters. He stood there able to heal and deliver each soul but no one noticed Him. He had the power to give life and healing to all who were present, but no one sees Him. Why? Because they were too busy with their shrine. They were caught up in their legends and habits and didn't notice that the prophecy was being fulfilled right before their eyes. Once again, why? Because that's how they always did it. That's the way their fathers did it, the way their father's fathers did it, and no one dared to challenge the accepted standard.

I believe that we can and should question the standard. Are our actions and our faith rooted in the Word of the Lord or in generations of legends and fairytales that we have accepted as the truth our whole lives long?

Amen!

Universal Life Church

Since I started writing, I have two reasons why I write. The first is I feel something deep in my spirit that drives me to type it all out. There are other times I write as a discipline. I sit down and just think of a word that describes an event or experience I have had. I started this as a discipline, but I finish having found the lesson in the following.

Dry?

Dry

There is a downside to pretty weather. We have been enjoying the wonderful cool and dry weather here in Mississippi. For close to a month we have not had any substantial rain after what seemed to be three months of stormy weather. I have enjoyed everyday that a shining sun has greeted me. Yesterday evening I was in my front yard and I noticed all my shrubs and ivy were drooping. I have a flowering shrub on the side of the house that has been progressing in this droopy look. I know it must be that I am just slow for I never connected the drooping plants to the fact we have had no rain. I was saying to my wife, "I wonder what is wrong with all these plants?" I looked down at my shoes with dust all over them and it was a great eureka moment?. they are dry.

Just a month ago I was bragging about how beautiful my grass looks, and now it is starting to look very dry. This morning I arose and pulled out my water hose and began to water my thirsty plants and reflected on my own life. In seasons when things are going well, the danger we all face is dryness. It is hard to diagnose your problem, because you can check off where you pray and attend church, however over time, if you don't recognize the problem, you will face the reality that your spirit life has dried up.

I suppose I can relate to some degree to my azalea bush, St. Augustine Grass, Nandinas, and the other plans that live in my yard. Living is not enough to stay alive. Surviving is not enough to survive. Just as I realized the investment I had in all these plants was about to disappear, it is possible to allow pretty weather to lull us into thinking everything is fine.

Later this morning as I turned my attention to my wife's very dirty van, I began to apply the warm sudsy water and scrub the dirty rims, I realize this is what we all need to do in our spiritual life. We need to make a little extra effort to be sure the foliage of our faith does not droop or the blooms on our hope do not fall away.

I am in awe at what God has done around me in the past nine months. It is like nothing I would have expected. From moving, to our first services in Clinton and the wonderful experiences and people along the way, I want to be sure I make the extra effort to keep everything well watered.

Storms bring rain and in spite of the boisterous thunder and blinding lighting, there is a forgotten element that is the blessing of the storm. Our lives, harvest, hope and spirit receives rain from heaven. It opens our spirit to drink in the rain and hope for a day when the sun is shinning. My little message today is admonition to all of us.

If you're in a storm, the precipitation is watering your promise. If your in the middle of a fulfilled prophecy, be thankful and take the steps to be sure you are getting what you need to keep your spirit properly watered.

I am thankful I could take a deep drink from that Fountain today, to see the wonderful hand of the shepherd leading me beside the still water this morning as he used the condition of my yard to be a parable that ministered to my heart.

May you drink deeply of His Spirit today!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Following the Gospel
Making the World a Better Place.

This nation was founded on Christian principles. The majority of Americans claim to have some kind of religion. You may find the Holy Bible in 90% of our homes. That's the good news.

Now the bad news:

It's plain to see that very few folk read their bible. It says in the Gospel According to Matt-hew, Chapter 24 Verse 5; For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many. That is so true and frightening. If you have wondered why there are so many different de-nominations of religion, this is the reason. Some can be considered Cults, false religions. They are the works of men, not God.

It seems that people are too gullible, and if a man is a "forceful speaker", they believe every-word he says.

(1). Hitler deceived the whole nation of Germany making them believe that the Jewish people were trash, an inferior race, and needed to be exterminated. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(2). Charles Manson had a large following, ;and he, like Hitler, made them believe murder was alright, nothing wrong with it, if it served your purpose. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(3). Then there?s the large party that followed Rev Jim Jones to South America, and were persuaded, or forced to drink poison. (See that ye be not deceived).

(4). Read about the Mountain Meadow Massacre, carried out by the (LDS) Mormons in Utah, circa, 1856. They call themselves Mormons, and have a book printed which they call the Book of Mormons. I call it The Book Of Morons.

All that is true history. All one needs do is check it out. Don't Take My Word For It.
"If any miserable scoundrels come here, cut their throats." Brigham Young

"The Mountain Meadows Massacre stands without a parallel amongst the crimes that stain the pages of American history. It was a crime committed without cause or justification of any kind to relieve it of its fearful character... When nearly exhausted from fatigue and thirst, [the men of the caravan] were approached by white men, with a flag of truce, and induced to surrender their arms, under the most solemn promises of protection. They were then murdered in cold blood."

William Bishop, Attorney to John D. Lee.

All of this is very frightening to me, to even think of having people in the world like that. It is my solemn promise to alert everyone I can about these things and try to make this a better world. I am 83 years of age, have 4 lovely daughters, and many grands and greats. So you can see why it is so important for me to want a clean safe world for them. I will strive to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Be a friend and help others when I can.

It's sad to know that all my efforts will be of no great consequence, knowing scripture con-cerning the Great Tribulation Period which is to come. Nonetheless I will make every effort to get in touch with as many people as I can, and attempt to make them see how things are going, and to not just "blindly" follow someone. May God help us all. Amen

Reverend Preacher Everette Carl Fox

Methods and Message of the Maker
Changing Methods and the Eternal Message of an Unchanging Maker

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;.."

Is it not amazing to consider the different ways God speaks and communicates to this world? If you study Gods dealing with man, you will find he rarely used the same method twice. In the Miracles of Jesus, he never duplicated what he had done before in the same method. He was confronted with the same need many times, but he seemed to reach into the creativity of the Divine to leave a lesson for us to learn.

Though his methods vary, the message of God to humanity has not changed. The Lord has been giving clear signs and confirmations to the things he values. God understands the power of perception. He has gone to great lengths to impress on humanity some basic principles of his nature and desires. Why would God go to such a great length to manifest the divine in humanity for a plan that would not finally culminate for hundreds and thousands of years? I say it is because he wants us to get a picture and perception of his nature. This picture and perception can change the way we see and how we live our lives. This vision of God changes the way men interact with each other. When we get a proper vision of the values of a holy God, it is a life transforming opportunity.

"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" Heb 1:3

I believe God is still watching the power of his message bring about the fullness of his will. Person to person as the Gospel is transmitted in words, action and the very spirit/ attitude of those he uses brings about a universal view of the maker of it all.

Imagine in your mind the Eternal Spirit of God putting on the garments of flesh to redeem men from the destructive power of carnality. Eye for an Eye, Flesh for Flesh, Hope for despair, healing for disease, direction for confusion, beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning and whatever the problem there is a corresponding solution found in the revelation of Christ.

Think about the many things God has done for you in your life. Get a picture in your mind of this. Arm yourself with the sword of a miraculous memory. Equip your life with the prophetic words you have received and read. Catch a glimpse of a victorious savior shaking the worlds and bringing all men to bow the knee even to confession of his Lordship.

No matter your situation. God has a Special work he can and will bring to bear.

Just thinking about the only God and Saviour Jesus Christ!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Jude 1:25
25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Titus 3:4-7
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 2:13
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

1 Tim 2:3-6
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

My Beloved
Song of Solomon 2:8-13, Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9, James 1:17-27, Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

The Pharisees were decent people. They had a program. They regarded the Roman occupation of their land as the judgment of God on Israel. They believed that because of Israels impurity and sin, God was keeping away from them, and thus the Temple was empty of Gods glory and the throne was empty of Davids dynasty. The Pharisees believed that if Israel were righteous, then God would forgive them and come back.

So their strategy was to keep the Laws of Moses very strictly. If the Law told Levites to wash their hands, then all the Jews should wash their hands. If it told them to wash before a sacrifice, then they should wash before eating anything. If it said not to cook a kid in its mothers milk, then never cook meat and milk together at all. This scrupulous kind of righteousness would win again Gods favor, forgiveness, and return. That was their program, and Jesus was their problem, because Jesus wasnt helping. Thats why they were against him. The felt he was keeping God away.

Jesus was saying that God already had come backthat is, in himand that God was already forgiving sins, the sins of the sinners as much as the righteous. Jesus disputed the whole approach to their religious practices. Dont get him wrong. Its not that Jesus denied the value of good works and religious practices. His own brother James, the author of our Epistle, certainly did not hear him to say that. His point is that our religious practices and our good works are not where we connect with God. Its in our souls where we connect with God. Your soul is what must be clean for God, no matter how clean your hands may be or how holy your practices.

You have a soul. You are a soul. You know yourself as a body, with a certain look and a certain height and a certain weight, but you need to know yourself as a soul. Your soul is the most important thing about you. The business of your soul is the most important business that you have. You need to cultivate your soul. The cleaning of your soul, the grooming of your soul, the care and feeding of your soul, the exercising of your soul, this is the most important thing you do each day.

When you get up in the morning, how long do you take to get ready? How much time do you need to make your breakfast, to shower, to groom yourself in front of the mirror, to get dressed? How much time do you give to your morning workout, or your visit to the gym? Such things are good to do, your body is a gift of God to you, you should honor it and care for it and rejoice in it. It is meant someday to live forever before the face of God. But how much time do you give to the grooming and feeding of your soul?

The cultivation of our bodies has benefits discernible and immediate. We feel good when we eat and when were clean. When we look good we get compliments. But the payoff from the cultivation of our souls is never so discernible nor immediate. The soul is something of a mystery, even for those who are most spiritual. Indeed, the more you know your soul, the more mysterious it is. Thats from the very nature of the soul itself, its from the way it was designed by God. The soul is designed for transcendence, it is designed to reach beyond the boundaries of sound and sight and sense, your soul is grounded in your mind but it reaches beyond your mind.

Your soul is the leading organ of your body. The soul is the organ that gives the definition to our species. What the nose is for the dog, and what ears for the bat, and eyes for the eagle, so the soul is the special organ given to our species for the distinct vocation of our specieswe are the animals designed for spirituality, for transcendence, for the beyond. The Bible sees our species as among the animals, its as plain as Noahs Ark, but yet we have a special place and office among the animals. The Epistle of James says that we are a kind of first fruits of Gods creatures. We are those creatures that are dedicated to God, that are set aside for God, for special attention to God, for a special relationship to God.

In our culture today we see a reawakening to transcendence and a revival of spirituality. Yet so much of this spirituality is self-absorbed. Its the soul turned in on itself. Its all about self-empowerment and discovering ones own divinity. This fashionable approach to spirituality is like looking in a mirror, to use the metaphor of James 1:24. You can look and look but when you look away you disappear, you cannot be at rest in your own self alone, you can only rest in God. Why gaze in the mirror when you can look at your Beloved? Truest love is not the love of self but the love of someone other than yourself, someone who is always other than yourself.

Our souls belong to us but they are not designed for ourselves. We are designed for God. St. Augustine said, "Thou has made us for thyself, O God, and our souls are restless till they find their rest in thee." Our souls are lost and wandering until we find our true goal and our proper object. The proper purpose of our souls is our relationship with God. Your soul is that organ of your body which directs your body to live for God. Your soul is meant to animate your body and calibrate your feelings and integrate your actions and motivate your mind. But it can only do this if it is directed beyond yourself. Your soul cannot be satisfied until it is satisfied with God.

God is your souls Beloved, and your soul is the Beloved of God. Your soul is the handmaiden of God. In the Bible, the soul is regarded as feminine, even the souls of men. This is a wonderful and healing metaphor, for men as well as women, in different ways. I want to be clear that it is metaphorical and not essential, because finally God has no sexuality, God is a Spirit, God is neither male nor female, so the femininity of our souls is finally a metaphor, but it is a metaphor which God has given as a gift to us.
Its a great gift to feel your soul as a she, and to be able to identify with the Virgin Mary, and to sing with her, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden." I am the Virgin who becomes a mother, I am a handmaiden who becomes a lover, I am the servant who becomes a Beloved. I am my beloveds and my Beloveds mine.

I close with words from James: Welcome with meekness the implanted word that has power to save your souls. The saving of your souls he means is not just when you die, but for today. The word of God has power to keep our souls alive, and more, to give us abundant life. The word of God is the food of your soul. And God desires to feed us. God loves us. God loves your soul. So it doesnt depend on us, except that we open ourselves to God. It is all gift. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a find of first fruits of his creatures.
